Choosing a pre filter cartridge that protects what follows

A prefilter is defined by its job rather than its construction: it protects whatever comes next. That might be a reverse osmosis membrane, a carbon block, a softener valve or an ultraviolet sleeve, and in every case the prefilter is the cheap consumable that keeps an expensive component working. Choosing one well is mostly about restraint.

Rate it for the load, not for ambition

The instinct is to fit the finest cartridge available, and it is usually wrong. A very fine prefilter on water carrying real sediment blocks quickly, restricts flow, and has to be changed constantly, which is exactly the outcome a prefilter is supposed to prevent. The right rating catches what would damage the next stage while passing everything else. Where the load is heavy, two cartridges in series, coarse then fine, outlast a single fine cartridge many times over and cost less to run.

What each downstream stage needs protecting from

A reverse osmosis membrane needs sediment removed and chlorine removed, which is why RO systems carry both a sediment and a carbon prefilter, in that order. A carbon block needs sediment kept off its face, since particles blind the surface and waste the media inside. A softener valve needs grit kept out of its seals. An ultraviolet lamp needs turbidity removed so light can reach organisms. Knowing which of these you are protecting tells you both the rating and whether carbon belongs in the prefilter position.

Order, and the one that is fixed

Sediment always comes before carbon. Reversing them wastes the carbon, which loads up with particles it was never meant to hold, and leaves the sediment element polishing water that has already fouled the expensive stage. After those two, treatment stages follow: iron and manganese removal, softening, then any membrane, and ultraviolet last of all. That ordering is not a preference; each stage either damages or is damaged by the ones it is placed against wrongly.

Changing it, and what it tells you

A prefilter is the cheapest thing in the train and the one most worth changing on time, because every interval it is left past is borrowed from the component behind it. Change sediment elements on pressure drop where gauges are fitted, and carbon prefilters on throughput, since exhausted carbon looks new. A prefilter that blocks unusually quickly is information: something upstream has changed, and on a well that can mean the well itself. Does sediment or carbon come first?

Why does my prefilter block so quickly?

Either the rating is too fine for the load, or something upstream has changed. On a well, a sudden increase in sediment is worth investigating.

Can I skip the prefilter to improve flow?

Only at the cost of the stage behind it. A membrane or a carbon block without prefiltration fails far sooner than the prefilter would have cost.
