Osmosis inversa: how reverse osmosis works at home

Osmosis inversa is simply the Spanish term for reverse osmosis, the same technology sold across the United States under that English name. Household pressure pushes water through a membrane so fine that most dissolved substances cannot follow, and they leave down a drain line. It is the broadest treatment a homeowner can install at a single tap.

What the membrane is doing

In natural osmosis, water moves across a membrane toward the saltier side. Reverse osmosis applies pressure to force it the other way, leaving dissolved salts, metals and many other contaminants behind. The membrane rejects a very wide range of dissolved material at once, which is what separates it from carbon: carbon holds molecules on a surface, while a membrane simply refuses passage by size and charge. The rejected material has to go somewhere, so a share of the feed water carries it to the drain.

The stages either side of the membrane

A membrane on its own would not last, so systems are built as a train. Sediment cartridges catch particles that would abrade or block it. A carbon prefilter takes out chlorine, which attacks the membrane material directly and is the most common cause of a short membrane life. After the membrane sits a storage tank, then a final polishing carbon stage to catch any taste picked up in storage. Each of those prefilters has its own change interval, and skipping them is the fastest way to ruin the expensive part.

What it removes, and what it does not

Reverse osmosis is the usual answer for dissolved contaminants that carbon cannot hold: nitrate, arsenic, most dissolved salts, fluoride, and a broad set of metals. Certified systems are also the standard household route for a range of newer concerns. What it will not do is protect your house. It treats water at one tap, so scale, iron staining in the laundry and chlorine in the shower are all outside its reach. Bacteria are a separate question that needs disinfection rather than filtration alone.

Point of use or whole house

Most homes install a point of use system under the kitchen sink with a dedicated faucet, or set a countertop unit next to it with no plumbing at all. Whole house reverse osmosis exists, but it is a different animal: it needs a large storage tank, a repressurization pump, a much bigger drain allowance and prefiltration sized for the whole flow, and it is normally reserved for supplies with a problem that genuinely affects every fixture.
