Homemade filters divide into two very different projects. One is assembling standard components into a real treatment installation, which works because the components are engineered. The other is the improvised layered bottle of gravel, sand and charcoal, which is a genuinely useful demonstration and is not a way to make drinking water. Confusing the two is dangerous rather than merely disappointing.

What an improvised filter actually achieves

Layers of gravel, sand and crushed charcoal in a bottle will clarify muddy water impressively: particles are strained, the water comes out visibly clearer, and some odour is reduced. That is worth understanding, because clarity is the thing people use to judge water and it is the least reliable indicator there is. Bacteria, viruses and protozoa pass through such a filter freely. So do dissolved metals, nitrate and chemicals. The water leaving looks far better than the water going in and may be no safer at all.

Charcoal is not activated carbon

This is the substitution that undermines most homemade builds. Activated carbon is manufactured by treating carbon at high temperature to open an enormous internal pore structure, and that structure is what adsorbs chlorine and organic molecules. Barbecue charcoal or campfire char has almost none of it, and briquettes contain binders and accelerants nobody should be putting in drinking water. If a build calls for carbon, use actual activated carbon media, which is inexpensive and sold by the bag.

Building a real system from standard parts

The other kind of self build is entirely legitimate: standard housings, rated cartridges, isolation valves, a bypass and correct stage order will produce a treatment train as good as an installed one, because every component is doing what it was engineered to do. The discipline is the same as any installation: size for the flow the house draws, order the stages so nothing damages the stage behind it, and change cartridges on schedule. For genuinely untrusted water

The EPA notes that private wells are not federally regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act, and a USGS study of 2,100 private wells found about one in five carried at least one contaminant above a human-health benchmark, so an untested source deserves caution rather than improvisation. Boiling is the reliable field answer for organisms. For chemistry, only a laboratory test tells you what is there and only matched equipment removes it. A homemade filter is a good way to understand filtration and a poor way to trust water.
