It works by sacrificing media into the water, which means the tank needs topping up and the water comes out slightly harder than it went in.
How the media does the work
The common media is calcite, a crushed calcium carbonate that dissolves slowly in acidic water and raises the pH toward neutral. Where the water is very aggressive, calcite alone cannot lift the pH far enough, so a magnesium oxide media is blended in to give a stronger correction. The reaction depends on contact time, so the tank has to be sized for the household's flow rather than bought as a one-size unit. Too fast a flow and the water leaves before the media has changed it.
The side effects are predictable, so plan for them
Because the media dissolves into the water, the treated supply carries more calcium and is therefore harder than the raw water. On a house that already needs a softener, that is a minor addition; on a house that did not, it can be enough to notice on kettles and glassware. The bed also compacts and channels over time, which is why the control valve backwashes it periodically to lift and regrade the media. That backwash needs a drain and enough flow to fluidize the bed.
Where it sits relative to iron and softening
Order matters. Raising pH changes how iron behaves: Penn State Extension notes that a softener can remove dissolved iron when pH is above 6.7, hardness is between 3 and 20 grains per gallon and dissolved iron is under 5 mg/L, while iron that has already oxidized fouls the resin. So a neutralizer often goes ahead of iron treatment and softening, correcting the pH so the later stages can do their jobs. Iron and manganese carry secondary, aesthetic standards with recommended maximums of 0.3 mg/L iron and 0.05 mg/L manganese.
Maintenance is refilling, not replacing
The media is consumed, so the routine chore is adding media to the tank rather than changing a cartridge. How often depends on how acidic the water is and how much the household uses, and the honest way to track it is to test the treated water periodically and top up when the pH starts drifting down. Does a neutralizer make water hard?
