When well water smells like sulfur, you are almost always smelling hydrogen sulfide gas, and the nose detects it long before any instrument would. The first job is not buying equipment: it is finding out whether the smell comes from the well itself, from bacteria in the water heater, or from a drain trap near the fixture. Each has a different fix, and two of them cost almost nothing.
Narrow it down before you spend anything
Run the cold tap at the fixture nearest the pressure tank and smell it. Then run the hot tap at the same fixture. If only the hot side smells, the source is the water heater, where a magnesium sacrificial anode reacting with sulfate-reducing bacteria produces the gas. If both sides smell, the problem is arriving with the water. If the smell only appears at one sink and fades as the water runs, sniff the drain instead, because bacterial film in a trap smells identical from a foot away. Fill a glass, carry it to another room and smell it there: if the glass is clean, the plumbing fixture is your culprit, not the well.
Where the gas comes from in groundwater
Hydrogen sulfide forms underground where sulfate-reducing bacteria break down naturally occurring sulfate in oxygen-poor conditions, and it can also come from decaying organic matter in the aquifer or from the well itself. It is a dissolved gas, not a particle, which is why sediment cartridges and ordinary pleated filters do nothing at all for it. The concentration often varies with season, water table and pumping rate, so a smell that comes and goes is normal behavior rather than evidence that the problem fixed itself. The EPA notes that private wells are not regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act, so nobody is monitoring this supply except the owner.
Treatment that actually removes hydrogen sulfide
The reliable approach is oxidation followed by filtration: convert the dissolved gas into elemental sulfur particles, then trap and backwash them away. Air injection systems draw a pocket of air into the top of a media tank and are the common choice for light to moderate smell with no bacteria problem. Catalytic carbon handles lighter loads at lower cost but the bed exhausts and must be replaced. Where the smell is strong, or where iron and bacteria come with it, continuous chlorine injection ahead of a retention tank and a backwashing filter is the durable answer. Fixing the water heater version
If only the hot water smells, replacing the standard magnesium anode rod with an aluminum-zinc or powered anode usually ends it, because the reaction that generates the gas depends on the metal being consumed. Flushing the tank and raising the thermostat temporarily to disinfect it can clear an established bacterial population, but do this carefully and lower the setting afterward to avoid scald risk at the taps. If the smell returns within weeks of an anode swap, the water arriving at the heater is already carrying sulfide and you are back to treating the supply itself.
Test before you size anything
Hydrogen sulfide degasses quickly, so a sample sitting in a car for a day can read clean while the tap plainly stinks. Use a lab that supplies a preserved sample bottle and follow its instructions exactly, and test iron, manganese, pH, hardness and coliform bacteria at the same time, since those results change which treatment is appropriate and how it must be sized. Will a carbon filter or a softener remove the smell?

Why does the smell come back after shock chlorinating the well?
