What causes pipe scaling and how to stop it getting worse

Pipe scaling is the hard mineral lining that builds inside pipework, heaters and appliances on hard water supplies. It forms because dissolved calcium and magnesium become less soluble as water is heated, so they come out of solution onto the hottest surface available and bond there. That is why the hot side scales and the cold side largely does not.

Where it starts and how it spreads

The first deposits form on heat exchange surfaces: the element of an electric heater, the coil of a gas one, the plate exchanger of a combination boiler. Scale is a poor conductor, so it insulates the surface, which forces the appliance to run hotter to deliver the same output, which in turn accelerates deposition. From there it travels: the hot distribution pipework picks it up, aerators and shower heads block, mixer cartridges seize and the tighter passages in dishwashers and washing machines narrow. The cold side scales only slowly, and mostly at points of turbulence.

What it actually costs

In flow first. A narrowing hot pipe shows itself as a shower that has quietly weakened over years and a bath that takes longer to fill, and by the time it is obvious the restriction is well established. In fuel next, because an insulated heat exchanger wastes energy on every cycle. And in equipment life, because scaled elements overheat and fail, seized mixer cartridges are replaced rather than serviced, and a scaled plate exchanger in a combination boiler is an expensive repair. None of that is recovered by treating the water later, which is the argument for treating it early.

The fixes that work

Ion exchange softening removes the calcium and magnesium and is the only approach that stops new scale entirely and slowly lifts existing deposits, at the cost of a drain connection, salt and a regeneration cycle. Template assisted crystallization conditioners leave the hardness in the water but greatly reduce its tendency to bond to hot surfaces, with no drain and no salt. Judging your own risk

Look before you spend. Pull an aerator and a shower head and see what is on them, since those show years of accumulation in a form you can hold. Check the element or exchanger if the heater is accessible. Then get a hardness figure, from the utility's Consumer Confidence Report on a municipal supply or from a test on a well, because the treatment choice and the payback both follow from that number rather than from how the water feels in the hand.
