The five signs worth checking
White crust on the kettle element, the shower head and around taps is the clearest, since that is the mineral left behind as water evaporates. Soap that will not lather and needs more product than it should is the second. A film on shower screens and glassware that returns after cleaning is the third. Laundry that comes out stiff or grey over time is the fourth. And the fifth is appliance behaviour: a water heater that has become noisy or a washing machine that has needed descaling suggests the same cause. Two or three of these together is a strong indication.
The soap shake test
Take a clear bottle, fill it about a third with cold water from the tap, add a few drops of plain liquid soap without added moisturisers, cap it and shake hard for a few seconds. Soft water produces a thick head of suds that lasts, and the water below stays clear. Hard water produces a thin scum with little lasting foam and leaves the water below cloudy. It is a rough test rather than a measurement, but it separates the soft end from the hard end reliably enough to tell you whether the next step is worth taking.
Getting the actual number
The USGS classifies hardness as dissolved calcium and magnesium: soft at 0 to 60 mg/L as calcium carbonate, moderately hard at 61 to 120, hard at 121 to 180 and very hard above 180. Some reports use grains per gallon instead, so check the unit. On a community supply your utility publishes hardness in its annual report at no cost. On a private well, a laboratory test or a hardness test kit gives the figure. The band matters because it decides whether treatment is worth it and how a softener would be sized.
What the answer changes
In the soft and moderately hard bands, most households do nothing and are perfectly comfortable.
