Choosing a water filter housing wrench that fits your sump

The housing wrench is the moulded cup or strap that grips a filter sump so it can be unscrewed. It comes with most housings, gets lost within a year, and is remembered at the first cartridge change. It is also blamed for a problem it usually is not causing, because most housings that will not open are held by vacuum rather than by grip.

Why the sump resists

Two forces. The O ring compresses under pressure and continues gripping after the pressure is released. And unless the cap carries a pressure release button, closing the isolation valves leaves the sump under vacuum, so no amount of turning will move it until air is admitted. Open a downstream tap and press the release button first. A great many housings declared seized are simply sealed by atmospheric pressure and open easily once that is dealt with.

Getting one that fits

Wrenches are sized to sump diameter and are not interchangeable: a slim standard housing and a big diameter one take different tools, and moulded cups vary enough between brands to slip on the wrong body. Identify the housing before ordering, or measure the sump across its widest point. Where a household has several housings of different types, a strap wrench or an adjustable version covers them all and is worth having rather than keeping three moulded cups.

What not to use

Pipe wrenches, slip joint pliers and adjustable spanners all mark and distort the plastic sump, and a distorted sump will not seal afterwards, which turns a stuck housing into a leaking one. Straps improvised from belts and rubber sheets slip and knock knuckles. A cracked sump on a live main is a considerably worse problem than the one being solved, so if a housing genuinely will not move after the vacuum is released, stop and reconsider rather than applying more force.

The rest of the kit

A spare O ring, since the old one should never be reused and discovering that mid job means the water stays off. Food grade silicone lubricant for it, never petroleum grease, which swells and destroys the seal. A bucket and a towel, because a big diameter sump holds more water than expected. And a permanent marker for the date on the housing, which is what turns a guessed interval into a known one. Our housing replacement guide covers the full service.

Questions people ask about water filter housing wrench

Why will my filter housing not unscrew?

Usually vacuum rather than grip. Open a downstream tap and press the cap's pressure release button before applying more force.

Is one wrench good for all housings?

No. Wrenches are sized to sump diameter and vary between brands. A strap or adjustable wrench covers several sizes.

Can I use pliers instead?

Not without damage. Pipe wrenches and pliers distort the plastic sump, and a distorted sump will not seal afterwards.

What else should I have to hand?

A spare O ring, food grade silicone lubricant, a bucket and towel, and a marker for writing the date on the housing.
