A calcite tank is passive: water passes through a bed of crushed limestone and dissolves calcium carbonate on the way through, raising pH and adding hardness in the process. It needs no chemicals and no power, and it suits mildly acidic water at household flow rates. Its limits are real. Contact time falls as flow rises, so a high-demand house outruns the bed. Very acidic water exhausts the media fast and demands frequent top-ups. And the hardness it adds may push a household toward needing a softener that it did not need before. Injection has none of those limits and costs a pump, a solution tank and regular attention instead.
How the system is put together
A metering pump draws a soda ash or potassium hydroxide solution from a mixing tank and injects it into the line through a quick-connect fitting, usually just after the well pump and before the pressure tank. The pump is triggered by a flow switch or paced by the pump's own signal so dosing tracks water use rather than running continuously. A retention tank downstream gives the solution time to mix and react before the water reaches the house. Downstream of that sits whatever else the well needs, since raising pH also makes iron and manganese easier to oxidize and remove, which is often a welcome side effect.
Living with a chemical feed
This is the least hands-off equipment in a residential water system. Solution has to be mixed and refilled, and the mixing ratio has to stay consistent or the pH drifts. The injection quill and check valve accumulate deposits and need periodic cleaning. The pump needs priming after it runs dry, and an airlocked pump will keep stroking while delivering nothing. Test pH at the tap regularly rather than assuming the setting from install still holds, since well chemistry shifts with the seasons. Will raising pH fix my iron problem too?
