A chlorine injection system for well water doses a measured amount of hypochlorite into the line as the pump runs, holds it in a retention tank long enough to react, then removes the leftover chlorine with a carbon filter. It is the workhorse fix for wells with hydrogen sulfide, stubborn iron, iron bacteria, or a persistent coliform result.

The three parts nobody can skip

First, a chemical metering pump drawing from a solution tank and injecting through a quill into the pipe, wired so it only runs when the well pump runs. Second, a retention tank giving the chlorine time in contact with the water: the whole point is that oxidation and disinfection are not instant. Third, a backwashing carbon filter downstream to strip the residual chlorine so nobody drinks or showers in it. Systems sold without the retention tank or without carbon after it are half a system, and they produce exactly the complaints you would expect.

Why contact time decides everything

Chlorine needs time to convert dissolved iron and manganese into filterable particles and to inactivate bacteria. That time comes from the volume of the retention tank set against your peak flow: a large family drawing hard on a small tank pushes water through before the reaction finishes. Size the tank to the household, not the budget. Cold water reacts more slowly than warm, and organic matter and high iron consume chlorine before it gets to work on the bacteria, so a well with several problems needs a higher dose and more time than a single-issue well.

What has to come after the injection

Oxidized iron and manganese come out of solution as particles, so a backwashing filter is needed to catch them. On heavy iron, a dedicated iron filter earns its place before the carbon. Carbon then removes the chlorine residual, and it must be backwashing rather than a cartridge on all but the smallest systems, because a cartridge blinds fast on oxidized metals. If a softener is in the train, it goes after the carbon: chlorine attacks resin, and Penn State Extension notes that oxidized iron fouls resin, so putting a softener ahead of the filtration is a way to destroy a resin bed quickly.

Continuous injection is not the same as shock chlorination

Shock chlorination is a one-time slug of strong chlorine poured into the well, held for hours, then flushed out. It clears a contamination event and is what you do after well work, flooding or a single positive bacteria test. Continuous injection treats every gallon forever, which is what you install when the source itself keeps producing the problem, whether that is sulfide gas from the aquifer or iron bacteria colonizing the casing. Living with a chemical feed

You are now a plant operator in a small way. Solution tanks need refilling with fresh hypochlorite, which loses strength on the shelf and faster in warmth and light. Injection quills scale and clog, particularly on hard water, and need periodic cleaning. Pump tubing perishes and is a consumable. Test the residual after the retention tank periodically to confirm the dose is still right, and test again after the carbon to confirm none is reaching the taps. Because the EPA does not regulate private wells under the Safe Drinking Water Act, nobody else is going to check any of this for you.

Will chlorine injection remove a rotten egg smell?

Yes, it is one of the standard fixes. Chlorine oxidizes hydrogen sulfide so it can be filtered out, provided the retention time is adequate and carbon follows to remove the residual.

Do I still need to shock the well?

Shock the well and the plumbing when you commission the system, and again after any well repair or flooding. Continuous injection treats what leaves the well, not biofilm already in the casing.

Can I put the softener before the chlorine system?

No. Chlorine and oxidized iron both damage softener resin, so the softener belongs after the retention tank and the carbon filter, at the end of the treatment train.

How do I know the dose is correct?

Measure the chlorine residual after the retention tank with a test kit. Too little and the iron or bacteria persist, too much and you burn through carbon and chemical needlessly.
