How a well water chlorine injection system works

A well water chlorine injection system doses a measured amount of chlorine into the line after the pump, holds the water long enough for the chlorine to react, then filters the byproducts and the leftover chlorine back out before the water reaches the house. It is the heavy-duty answer to iron, sulfur smell and bacteria together, and its success is decided almost entirely by contact time.

The four parts, and what each is for

The chemical feed pump is a small metering pump that injects sodium hypochlorite solution into the pipe, triggered by the well pump or by a flow switch so it only doses when water is moving. The solution tank holds the diluted chlorine and needs to be sized so you are refilling it on a comfortable schedule rather than weekly. The retention tank is the part people try to skip: a large vessel that simply holds the treated water so the chlorine has time to oxidize iron, convert hydrogen sulfide and inactivate bacteria. Last comes a backwashing carbon filter, which strips the residual chlorine and the oxidation byproducts so the water arriving at the tap does not smell like a swimming pool.

Contact time is the design, not a detail

Chlorine does not act instantly. Oxidizing dissolved iron is fairly quick, hydrogen sulfide is slower, manganese is slower still, and disinfection needs a genuine dwell. That dwell comes from the retention tank volume divided by the flow rate through it, which is why a system sized for a small cabin will fail in a four bathroom house running two showers and a dishwasher. Undersize the retention tank and you get the worst of both worlds: chlorine in the water at the tap, and iron still coming through to stain the laundry. When a quote for one of these systems does not mention retention volume against your peak demand, that is the question to ask before signing anything.

What it fixes that simpler systems cannot

An air injection oxidizing filter handles moderate iron and sulfur with no chemicals and no refilling, and for many wells it is the better answer. Chlorine injection earns its complexity in three situations: iron or sulfur loads heavy enough to overwhelm an air-based system, iron bacteria which coat and slime everything downstream, and a coliform positive that keeps coming back after shock chlorination. It also treats all three at once, which is common on a shallow or older well. The tradeoff is that it is a system with a chemical inventory, a pump that needs periodic attention, and a filter behind it that must be maintained or the house tastes of chlorine.

Where regulation leaves you, and testing

Private wells are not federally regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act, and the EPA notes that around 15 percent of the US population, over 43 million people in more than 23 million households, rely on them. A USGS study of 2,100 private wells found about one in five carried at least one contaminant above a human-health benchmark. That means nobody is checking your water but you, and it means a chlorination system has no external audit. Questions people ask about well water chlorine injection system

Is chlorine injection the same as shocking a well?

No. Shock chlorination is a one-off disinfection of the well itself. Injection is continuous treatment of every gallon that enters the house.

Will the water taste of chlorine?

It should not. A properly sized backwashing carbon filter after the retention tank removes the residual chlorine before the water reaches any fixture.

Do I still need a softener with a chlorine injection system?

Yes if the water is hard. Chlorination oxidizes iron and sulfur but does nothing to calcium and magnesium hardness.

How often does the solution tank need refilling?

It depends on tank size, dose and household use, but a well designed system is refilled on a routine of weeks rather than days.
