The pressure problem in one paragraph

Refrigerator water valves and ice makers are designed for household mains pressure. A tanked reverse osmosis system delivers considerably less, and that delivery pressure falls as the bladder tank empties. The result is slow fills, small or hollow ice cubes, and sometimes an ice maker that decides the fill has failed. This is not a fault in either appliance, it is a mismatch. Larger storage tanks help, a permeate pump helps more, and a small demand pump on the outlet solves it outright.

Tubing, distance and fittings

Run the largest tubing the system supports, since a long thin line costs pressure over its length, and keep the route as short and gentle as the cabinets allow. Use good quality push-fit fittings and support the tube where it passes behind appliances so it cannot be crushed when the fridge is pushed back. Leave a service loop at the fridge end. Where the line crosses an unheated space, insulate it: a frozen reverse osmosis line is a burst line, and the tubing is thin.

Check valves and keeping the systems apart

Fit a check valve on the branch to the refrigerator so back pressure from the appliance cannot push into the storage tank, and use a proper tee rather than splicing the faucet line badly. If the refrigerator has its own internal filter, decide whether it stays in circuit; leaving it in adds another restriction and another cartridge to buy, though many people keep it as a final polish. Install a shutoff on the branch so the fridge can be isolated for service without draining the whole system.

Taste, minerals and clear ice

Reverse osmosis water is low in dissolved minerals, which is why ice made from it is clear and free of the white cloudy core that mineral water produces. Some households find the taste flat and add a remineralization cartridge after the membrane, which also raises pH slightly. If you add one, it goes before the tee that feeds the refrigerator so both the faucet and the ice benefit. Purge the first tank or two of water after commissioning before judging any of this.

When not to do it

A small system already struggling to keep the kitchen faucet supplied will not enjoy feeding an ice maker as well, and that is the point at which a higher output unit earns its keep. Refrigerators with high volume dispensers or large batch ice makers are also demanding. If the run would be very long or would cross a cold garage, a dedicated under sink filter at the kitchen and the mains supply at the fridge is a more reliable arrangement.
