How the fridge gets fed
A standard under-sink RO unit makes water slowly and stores it in a small pressurized tank, then delivers it to a dedicated faucet. Feeding a fridge means teeing off the treated line after the tank and running tubing to the appliance, usually through the cabinet back and along the base of the units. Use the tubing size the appliance calls for, keep the run as short as the layout allows, and put an accessible shutoff at the tee so the fridge can be isolated without shutting the whole system. Many installers also add a check valve toward the fridge, so a demand at the sink cannot pull back down the appliance line. Secure the tubing so a drawer cannot pinch it.
Pressure is the part people get wrong
An ice maker fill valve needs a working minimum pressure to open and to close cleanly, and RO tank pressure is lower and softer than mains pressure. A long tubing run to a fridge on the far side of the kitchen loses more, and a small or waterlogged storage tank makes it worse. The symptoms are familiar: hollow or half-formed cubes, a fill that runs on too long, or an ice maker that stops making ice a day after the RO membrane starts aging. Check the tank air charge with the tank empty of water, keep the run short, and where pressure is genuinely marginal a small permeate pump or a delivery pump on the treated side is the standard cure.
When RO is the wrong feed for the fridge
RO water is very low in dissolved minerals and is mildly aggressive as a result. Most modern fridges handle it, but some appliance makers advise against feeding RO water to their unit, and copper feed lines are a poor match. Read the appliance manual before you commit, and use plastic tubing rather than copper for the last run. There is also the volume question: a fridge with a through-door dispenser and a busy household can outpace a small RO unit, leaving both the fridge and the sink tap slow to recover. Filters, ice quality and maintenance
If the fridge is fed from RO, the appliance's own internal cartridge is doing very little, because the water is already treated. Some owners leave a fresh cartridge in place as a safeguard, and some fit the manufacturer's bypass plug where the model provides one. Either way keep to the RO system's own schedule: sediment and carbon prefilters on their regular change, membrane when performance falls off. Clear ice is a good early warning system.
