A hardness test tells you how much dissolved calcium and magnesium your water carries, which is the number every softener decision is sized from. You can get it four ways: test strips for a rough read, a drop titration kit for a usable number, a lab test for certainty, or your water utility's published data if you are on city water. Match the method to what the answer will be used for.
Strips, drops, labs and reports
Dip strips change color against a chart and take seconds; they are fine for a yes-or-no answer but coarse near the boundaries. Drop titration kits count drops of reagent until a color change, which gives a genuinely usable number in grains per gallon and is what many installers carry. A certified lab test costs more and takes days but stands up for warranty claims, well records and disputes. On city water, the utility often publishes typical hardness, though the value at your tap can drift from the plant's average, so a quick strip check at home is still worth doing.
Reading the number you get
The USGS classifies hardness measured as calcium carbonate: soft water runs 0 to 60 mg/L, moderately hard is 61 to 120, hard is 121 to 180, and very hard is anything more than 180. Kits and installers often quote grains per gallon instead, which is just the same measurement in different units; the kit's chart converts between them. Where your water lands in those bands, together with how much scale, spotting and soap trouble you are actually living with, is what tells you whether softening is worth the equipment.
Testing well water properly
On a private well, hardness rarely travels alone, so test for it as part of a wider panel covering iron, manganese, pH and the other things that shape a treatment decision. Sample from a tap ahead of any existing treatment, run the water briefly first so you are testing the supply rather than what sat in the pipe, and follow the kit or lab's sampling directions exactly. Retesting after a softener goes in
A hardness test is also the cheapest way to prove a softener is doing its job. Test the treated water after installation to confirm the exchange is working, and again whenever you notice spotting or soap behaving differently, because a resin bed fouling or a valve mis-set shows up in the hardness number long before it shows up as an obvious failure. Keep strips in the house for this; the rough answer is exactly what monitoring needs.
