A water treatment pump is any pump that exists to make treatment work rather than to move your household supply: chemical feed pumps that meter chlorine, peroxide or soda ash into the line, and booster pumps that give a reverse osmosis membrane or a distribution loop the pressure it needs. Knowing which kind you are looking at matters, because they are sized, wired and maintained completely differently, and the wrong one solves nothing.
Chemical feed pumps: the workhorse of well treatment
A chemical feed pump, also called a dosing or metering pump, draws solution from a tank and injects a precise amount into the water line every time the well pump runs. Chlorine feeds handle bacteria, iron and sulfur odor; hydrogen peroxide does similar work without a chlorine taste; soda ash raises the pH of acidic water that corrodes copper. The pump is usually wired to switch on with the well pump or paced by a flow sensor, so dosing tracks actual water use. Booster and delivery pumps inside treatment equipment
Reverse osmosis systems often include a small electric booster pump, because membrane performance depends on feed pressure and many homes, especially on wells with low pressure switch settings, cannot supply enough. Permeate pumps do a related job without electricity, using drain-water energy to fill the storage tank more completely. Larger whole-house setups sometimes add a delivery pump after an atmospheric storage tank, for example downstream of a whole-house RO or a slow-producing treatment stage, to re-pressurize water for the house. Each of these is chosen by the treatment equipment's requirements, not by the plumbing.
What a treatment pump is not: your well pump
The pump in the well casing or the jet pump in the basement is water supply plumbing, not water treatment, and pump replacement is a well contractor's job. It still matters to treatment in one way: every feed pump and most treatment valves are timed or triggered around the well pump's operation, so a failing well pump with rapid cycling will make dosing erratic and can shorten media life. Choosing and maintaining one
For a feed pump, the questions that matter are the chemical being dosed, the output range, the pressure it must inject against and how it will be signaled: hardwired to the pressure switch, paced by a water meter, or run on a timer. Peristaltic models tolerate solutions that gas off, like peroxide and bleach, better than diaphragm models, which can vapor-lock. Maintenance is mostly consumables: squeeze tubes, diaphragms, foot valves and injection check valves all wear, and a failed check valve lets treated line water push back into the solution tank. Keep spare wear parts on the shelf, because a stalled feed pump quietly stops your whole disinfection stage.
Questions people ask about water treatment pump
Do I need a pump for a whole house filter?
Usually not. Cartridge and backwashing filters run on your existing line pressure. Pumps enter the picture when you are injecting a chemical ahead of the filter or when the treatment stage itself, like reverse osmosis, needs more pressure than the house supplies.
Why does my RO system have its own little pump?
A reverse osmosis membrane separates water using pressure. On low-pressure supplies the membrane runs slowly and wastes more water to drain, so manufacturers add a booster pump ahead of the membrane to keep production and efficiency where they should be.
How do I know if my chemical feed pump is actually dosing?
Watch the solution tank level over a week of normal use and test the water downstream. A chlorine feed, for example, should leave a measurable residual you can check with inexpensive test strips. A full tank that never drops means the pump has lost prime or a check valve failed.
Can one pump inject two different chemicals?
No. Chemicals like chlorine and soda ash are kept in separate solution tanks with separate pumps and injection points, both because they can react in concentrated form and because each needs its own dose rate.
