What black sediment in well water usually turns out to be

Black particles in well water have four common causes and they need completely different responses, from a filter cartridge that is falling apart to a metal that needs a treatment stage. Working through them in order takes an afternoon and costs nothing, and it prevents the usual outcome of buying an iron filter for a problem that turned out to be a failed cartridge.

Check the equipment you already own first

This is the cheapest cause and the most common one in a house that already has treatment. Carbon fines from a new or disintegrating carbon cartridge or media bed look exactly like black grit, and so does softener resin escaping through a cracked distributor or a failed screen. Look at the particles: carbon fines are light, crumble and float or settle slowly, while resin beads are spherical, uniform and roll on a white surface. If either is what you have, the fix is at the equipment, not at the water.

Manganese, the usual chemical answer

Penn State Extension notes that iron and manganese carry secondary, aesthetic standards, with recommended maximums of 0.3 mg/L for iron and 0.05 mg/L for manganese. Manganese leaves black to dark brown deposits, stains laundry and fixtures, and builds a dark film in cisterns and dishwashers, and it does so at concentrations well below those that make iron obvious. It also needs a higher pH than iron to oxidize, which is why a system installed for iron often clears the orange staining and leaves the black untouched.

Iron and manganese bacteria

If the black material is slimy rather than gritty, and comes with a dark film that reforms on the inside of the toilet cistern within days of cleaning, suspect bacteria that use these metals. They are not a health hazard in themselves but they produce slime that shields other organisms, blocks screens and fouls filters, and they regrow from whatever survives. Treating them means disinfection, typically shock chlorination and often continuous chlorination afterwards, alongside filtration for the metal itself.

Plumbing, and how to confirm the source

Disintegrating rubber from an old flexible hose, degraded gaskets, or debris from a failing pressure tank bladder all shed black particles. Two tests narrow it: draw a sample at the wellhead or the very first tap after the pressure tank and compare with a tap deep in the house, and check whether the particles appear on hot water only, which points at the heater.
