A sand seperator, spelled separator on every product you will actually find, is a centrifugal device that removes grit from water without any filter media at all. Water enters tangentially, spins around a conical chamber, and the particles heavier than water are thrown outward and fall into a collection chamber at the bottom while clean water leaves through the center.
Why no cartridge is the point
Nothing is being strained, so nothing blinds off and nothing needs replacing. On a well producing real sand, a cartridge filter placed first is consumed within days and becomes an expensive, constant chore, whereas a separator handles the same load indefinitely at a nearly constant pressure drop. That is the whole reason to use one: it takes the bulk load off everything downstream so that the cartridge or media filter after it is dealing with fine silt rather than with grit, and lasts as it was designed to.
What it catches and what it misses
Separation works on density, so it removes sand, grit and heavy particles efficiently and progressively less as particles get lighter and finer. Fine silt and clay largely stay in suspension and pass through, as does anything with a density close to water, including most organic matter. Everything dissolved is untouched: iron in solution, hardness, tannins and sulfur smell all go straight through. It is a first stage that makes the rest of the train viable, and never a treatment on its own.
Flow, purging and installation
Separation depends on the velocity through the chamber, so these are rated for a flow range and they under perform below it as well as above it, which is the specification people miss. Fit it immediately after the pressure tank, ahead of everything else. The collection chamber needs purging, either manually on a schedule or automatically with a timed valve, and a chamber left unpurged eventually fills and passes grit through as if it were not there. Route the purge to a drain that can take grit without blocking.
Ask why there is sand first
A separator is the right answer to sand in the line but it is not an answer to why the sand is there. A well that has recently started producing coarse sand may have a failed screen, a pump set too low in the borehole, over pumping, or a formation problem, and every one of those wears the pump out while the separator quietly does its job.
