An ultraviolet water purifier is a lamp, a quartz sleeve, a stainless chamber and a ballast. Water flows around the sleeve, the lamp shines through it, and organisms passing close enough for long enough are inactivated. Choosing one is mostly about matching the chamber to your flow and being realistic about the maintenance the unit demands.

What the unit is made of

The lamp sits inside a quartz sleeve so it never touches the water, and the sleeve is sealed at both ends with o rings that are the usual leak point. The chamber is stainless, sized so water spends enough time beside the lamp. The ballast drives the lamp and is the electronics box on the wall. Better units add a sensor that measures how much light is reaching the far side of the chamber and an alarm or a solenoid that shuts flow when output drops, which is the difference between knowing the unit is working and assuming it.

Point of use versus whole house

A small under sink or countertop unit treats only the water you draw at that fixture and is normally paired with a carbon block for taste and a sediment filter for clarity. A whole house unit treats everything entering the building and is the standard configuration for a private well, because the shower and the ice maker matter as much as the kitchen tap. The choice is not really about quality of treatment. It is about which water you are willing to leave untreated, and on a well with a positive bacteria test the answer is normally none of it.

Ultraviolet is a disinfection step and nothing more. It removes no hardness, no iron, no lead, no nitrate, no chemical taste and no sediment, and it leaves no residual disinfectant in the plumbing after the chamber. It also cannot rescue water that is cloudy or colored, because the particles shield the organisms. On a municipal supply, disinfection has already happened at the plant: every community water system publishes an annual Consumer Confidence Report and the EPA maintains a finder for them, so read yours before buying a purifier to solve a problem you may not have.
