Filter systems for wells: build the train from the test

Filter systems for wells are built from a water test, not bought as a one-size package. A well can carry sediment, iron, sulfur odor, hardness, bacteria or several of these at once, and each needs its own stage in the right order. Test first, then assemble only the stages your water actually requires.

You are the regulator on a private well

The EPA notes that private wells are not federally regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act, and that around 15 percent of the US population relies on them. A USGS study of 2,100 private wells found about one in five carried at least one contaminant above a human-health benchmark. Nobody tests or treats a private well unless the owner does, which is why a certified lab test is the first purchase, before any equipment. The common well treatment train

A full train, in order, runs sediment filtration first to protect everything downstream, then oxidation and filtration for iron, manganese or sulfur odor if the test finds them, then a softener where hardness is high, then carbon for taste and odor polishing, then UV disinfection where bacteria have appeared, and finally reverse osmosis at the kitchen tap for dissolved contaminants such as nitrates or arsenic. Sizing and order both matter

Whole-house well equipment must pass the home's peak flow or showers will starve when the washing machine fills, so systems are sold in stepped capacities and matched to household demand. Order matters just as much: iron reaching a softener fouls its resin, sediment blinds carbon beds, and cloudy water shields microbes from UV light. What should a well owner test for before buying filtration?

At minimum bacteria, nitrates, hardness, iron, manganese, pH and total dissolved solids. Local geology can add arsenic or other tests; a certified lab or your health department can advise.

Can one filter handle everything in well water?

No single unit treats sediment, iron, hardness, bacteria and dissolved contaminants at once. Wells with several problems need a train of stages, each doing one job in the right order.

How is a well system different from a city-water filter?

City water arrives disinfected and regulated, so filtration there is mostly polishing. Well water is untreated groundwater, so the owner supplies every barrier, from sediment to disinfection.
