Two things that matter at point of entry. More dirt holding, so a sediment cartridge on a gritty supply runs perhaps twice as long between changes, which turns a monthly chore into a seasonal one. And more contact time for carbon at the same flow rate, which is the difference between a carbon filter that reduces chlorine adequately and one that is being rushed. On a chloraminated supply, where contact time is the binding constraint, the longer format is often what makes catalytic carbon work at household flow.
Diameter still decides flow
Length adds media; diameter adds flow capacity. A slim twenty inch housing holds more media than a slim ten inch but does not flow much better, so a household whose complaint is poor pressure when two fixtures run needs the wider format rather than the longer one. The best whole house arrangement is usually the wider diameter in the twenty inch length, which gives both, at the cost of a physically large housing and cartridges that are heavier to handle.
Clearance is the constraint
A housing needs clearance below it equal to a cartridge length so the element can be pulled down and out, which for this format means a substantial gap under the sump. In a basement that is usually fine. Under a sink or in a cupboard it frequently is not, and the discovery is normally made after the housing is plumbed in. Measure the drop before buying, mount the housing high enough to allow it, and support the weight on a bracket rather than through the pipework.
Cost, and when it pays
Twenty inch cartridges cost more each but treat more water per cartridge, so the cost per volume is usually similar or better, and the saving that matters is in labour and nuisance rather than in money. It pays where cartridges are being changed frequently, where carbon needs more contact than the shorter format gives, or where the household simply wants a longer interval.
