Hardness is dissolved calcium and magnesium, and the USGS classification gives you the yardstick: soft water is 0 to 60 mg/L as calcium carbonate, moderately hard 61 to 120, hard 121 to 180, and very hard above 180 mg/L. Water at the soft end of that scale does not need softening equipment no matter what a door-to-door pitch says, while water in the hard and very hard bands produces the scale, spotting and lather problems the system exists to fix. A test strip or a lab figure turns the decision from a feeling into a number.
Picking the location
The system belongs on the main line after the meter or pressure tank and before the water heater, so every indoor fixture and the heater get soft water. Newer homes often include a softener loop, a pre-plumbed connection point that decides the location for you. Otherwise choose the spot by three utilities: a drain within reach for regeneration discharge, a standard outlet for the valve, and enough floor space for two tanks with working clearance around them. Ahead of delivery: confirm the drain plan, because the connection needs an air gap and a hose draped into a laundry tub without one can fail inspection; check the outlet works and is not on a switch; measure the space against the published tank dimensions rather than eyeballing; and clear a path, since resin tanks arrive heavy and brine tanks need regular salt access afterward. Does a soft water system need a drain to install?
