There is no such thing as a general purpose well filter. Water well filters are a family of very different machines, and each one is built for a specific contaminant, so choosing without a water test is guesswork with a price tag. Start from what your test says is wrong, then pick the device that treats it and place it correctly in the train.
Test before you buy anything
Private wells are not regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act, so no utility tests your water and no annual report arrives in the mail. The EPA notes that around 15 percent of the US population relies on private wells and cites a USGS study of 2,100 private wells in which about one in five carried at least one contaminant above a human-health benchmark. A certified lab panel covering coliform, nitrate, hardness, iron, manganese, pH, hydrogen sulfide and total dissolved solids is the foundation of every sensible decision that follows. Retest after any change in taste, color or smell, and after flooding.
Matching the filter to the fault
Sand and grit call for a centrifugal separator, silt and rust for a cartridge or backwashing sediment filter. Dissolved iron and manganese need oxidation and a media bed, or a softener within its published limits. Hydrogen sulfide needs air injection or chlorine feed followed by filtration. Hardness needs ion exchange. Acidic water that eats copper pipe and leaves blue-green stains needs a calcite neutralizer. Bacteria need shock chlorination and then a UV lamp. Nitrate and arsenic need reverse osmosis or a specific anion resin. Nothing on that list substitutes for anything else on it.
Order matters more than brand
The devices have to be in the right sequence or they sabotage each other. Solids first, so nothing abrasive reaches the valves. Oxidation and metals next, because Penn State Extension notes that oxidized iron fouls softener resin, while a softener can handle dissolved iron only when pH is above 6.7, hardness is 3 to 20 grains per gallon and dissolved iron is under 5 mg/L. Softening after that. Carbon for taste. UV last, since it needs clear water and leaves no residual. A well-chosen set of filters in the wrong order performs worse than a modest set in the right one.
Sizing, backwash and living with the system
Every backwashing vessel needs a drain with an air gap and enough flow to lift the bed, and that flow has to be within what your pump and well can actually deliver. A low yield well may need a storage tank and a booster pump before it can support a big filter train at all. Budget for annual costs, not just the install: media replacement, salt, cartridges, UV lamps and sleeve cleaning. Can one filter handle everything in my well water?
No. Sediment, iron, sulfur, hardness and bacteria each need different treatment. Combination systems exist but they are several devices in one cabinet, sized from a water test.
What should I test for on a private well?
At minimum coliform bacteria, nitrate, pH, hardness, iron, manganese and total dissolved solids, plus anything your region is known for such as arsenic or radon.
Do I need treatment if my water looks and tastes fine?
