Copper water pipe corrosion shows itself two ways: blue-green staining at fixtures and around joints, and pinhole leaks that appear without warning in pipe that looks sound. Both are usually a water chemistry problem rather than a plumbing defect, and replacing the pipe without changing the water simply resets the clock.
Aggressive water is the usual culprit
Copper is protected in service by a thin oxide film that forms on the inside of the pipe. Water that is acidic, low in dissolved minerals, or low in alkalinity fails to support that film and slowly dissolves the metal instead. Well water in areas with granitic or sandy geology is often naturally acidic. Reverse osmosis permeate sent into copper without pH correction behaves the same way. Dissolved carbon dioxide lowers pH further. The symptoms are consistent: blue-green staining in sinks and tubs, a metallic taste, and green residue where a joint has wept.
Velocity, oxygen and installation faults
Not all corrosion is chemical. Water moving too fast for the pipe size scours the protective film away, which is why erosion pitting shows up most often on undersized pipe, at the outside of tight elbows and immediately downstream of a partly closed valve. Excess flux left inside a joint at installation is acidic and eats the pipe from the inside. Trapped air pockets and high dissolved oxygen accelerate the process. Stray electrical current using the plumbing as a path causes its own pitting, which is why proper bonding and dielectric unions between copper and steel matter.
Diagnose before you spend
Get the water tested for pH, alkalinity, total dissolved solids and copper, and take the copper sample first draw after the water has stood overnight so you capture the worst case. Then look at where the failures are. Leaks concentrated near the water heater or on hot lines point at temperature and velocity; leaks scattered across cold lines point at water chemistry; a single leak beside a valve or elbow points at a hydraulic problem. Ask a plumber to cut out a failed section and look at the pitting pattern inside, since that says more about the mechanism than any surface inspection can.
What actually fixes it
Acidic water is corrected with a neutralizing filter, typically a calcite or calcite and magnesia bed at the point of entry that raises pH and alkalinity as water passes through, or with a soda ash feed pump where the demand is higher. Reverse osmosis permeate needs remineralization before it enters copper. Erosion problems are corrected by resizing pipe or fixing the restriction upstream. A water softener does not cause copper corrosion, contrary to a persistent myth, but it does not fix it either, so do not expect softener installation to stop leaks. Questions people ask about copper water pipe corrosion
Does a water softener cause pinhole leaks in copper?
No. Ion exchange swaps hardness minerals for sodium and does not make water corrosive. Acidic or low-alkalinity water is the usual cause, and it was there before the softener.
Is blue-green staining dangerous?
It signals that copper is dissolving into your water, which is worth testing and correcting. Run the cold tap until it turns colder before drinking after water has stood.
Will a neutralizing filter stop existing leaks?
It stops the mechanism causing new ones, but pipe already thinned by years of attack may still fail. Correcting the water and replacing the worst runs is the usual approach.
Can reverse osmosis water corrode my pipes?
Untreated permeate is low in minerals and slightly acidic, which is aggressive to copper. Whole house systems add a remineralization or pH correction stage for exactly this reason.
