Inline hose filter: what it does at the end of a garden hose

An inline hose filter is a small canister that screws between the spigot and the hose. It handles sediment, rust and, in carbon versions, the taste and chlorine that make hose water unpleasant. What it does not do is soften water, which is why it will not stop spots on a rinsed car.

The two things inside these canisters

Cheap units are pure sediment: a pleated or spun element that catches sand, silt and the rust flakes that come off old galvanized pipe and hose bibs. Better units add granular activated carbon, sometimes with a KDF media blended in, which strips chlorine and the plastic and rubber taste that hose water picks up. RV-specific canisters are almost always the carbon type, since the water is going to be drunk. Neither type removes dissolved minerals, and neither disinfects, so an inline hose filter is not a substitute for treating an unknown water source you intend to drink from.

RV and drinking use

This is the main market. Plugged onto the park spigot ahead of the fresh water hose, a carbon canister removes the chlorine taste from park water and catches the grit that would otherwise reach the RV pump and tank. Use a hose rated for potable water rather than a garden hose, keep the filter out of direct sun, and drain and store it dry between trips because a warm damp carbon canister grows biofilm. Replace it seasonally rather than stretching it: these are small cartridges with limited capacity and they load up quickly on silty park water.

Car washing, gardens and pressure washers

Car detailers reach for a hose filter to stop water spots and are usually disappointed, because spots are dried hardness minerals and hardness is dissolved calcium and magnesium that passes straight through carbon and sediment media. A spot-free rinse needs deionization or reverse osmosis, not a hose canister. Where a hose filter does earn its place outdoors is protecting equipment: a pressure washer pump, a drip irrigation manifold or a misting system all suffer from grit, and a sediment canister ahead of them saves nozzles and seals. Gardeners on chlorinated supply also use carbon versions for sensitive plants and ponds.

Flow, fittings and replacement

Every canister costs you pressure and flow, and a filter meant for a slow RV fill will throttle a sprinkler noticeably. Check the maker's flow rating against what you are running. Use the washers supplied at both ends and tighten by hand: overtightening cracks the plastic collars that these units are built with. Fit it at the spigot rather than the hose end so it is not dragged along the ground. Replace on flow rather than the calendar, and never leave a filter frozen in an outdoor line over winter.
