Fluoride removal is a narrow job with three real answers, and the reason people struggle with it is that none of the filters already in most houses does anything about it. Before buying, there is a check that costs nothing and frequently ends the question, because a fair number of supplies are not fluoridated at all.
Check whether it is there
The EPA notes that every community water system publishes an annual Consumer Confidence Report and maintains a finder for them, and that report states whether fluoride is added and what was measured. On a private well only a laboratory test answers it, since naturally occurring fluoride varies by aquifer and has no taste, colour or smell. Five minutes with the report is the cheapest step in this whole process and it decides whether the rest is relevant.
Reverse osmosis, the usual household route
An under sink system rejects fluoride along with most other dissolved material, and for most households it is the practical answer: one installation, a wide range of contaminants addressed at once, and treatment where it matters, at the drinking water tap. The costs are the system, a drain connection, cabinet space, prefilters annually and a membrane every few years. If other findings sit alongside the fluoride, this is usually the option that covers all of them together.
Activated alumina and bone char
Activated alumina is the medium used specifically for fluoride, including at municipal scale, and bone char works similarly. Both adsorb it onto their surface, and both depend on contact time and on pH, which means a slow flow and a real bed rather than a small inline cartridge at full tap flow. Capacity is exhausted silently, so replacement runs on a measured schedule rather than on any symptom. They are specialist media rather than general purpose filters.
What does not work, and where to treat
Activated carbon does not remove fluoride, whatever the stage count on a product. Softeners do not. Boiling concentrates it, since the water leaves and the fluoride stays. Standing and freezing do nothing. Because ingestion is the exposure route, treating at the kitchen tap is sufficient and far cheaper than treating every gallon entering the house, which would need a large system and would treat mostly water nobody drinks.
