What an ion exchange water filter does, and where it fits

An ion exchange water filter removes dissolved ions by swapping them for less troublesome ones held on a bed of resin beads. The most common example is a water softener, which trades calcium and magnesium for sodium, but specialty resins target nitrate, tannins and other dissolved contaminants that carbon filters cannot touch. The resin is reusable: a brine rinse recharges it over and over.

How the exchange actually happens

The resin bed is made of tiny polymer beads carrying charged exchange sites. As water flows through, ions with a stronger affinity for the resin, such as calcium and magnesium, displace the sodium or potassium ions loaded onto the beads and stay behind. The water leaves with the swapped ion instead of the original one. Nothing is strained or absorbed in the way a carbon or sediment filter works, which is why ion exchange handles dissolved minerals that pass straight through ordinary cartridge filters. When the exchange sites fill up, the system regenerates by flushing concentrated brine through the bed, driving the process in reverse and sending the captured ions to the drain.

What ion exchange is the right tool for

Hardness is the classic job. The USGS defines hardness as dissolved calcium and magnesium and classes water as soft at 0 to 60 mg/L as calcium carbonate, moderately hard at 61 to 120, hard at 121 to 180, and very hard above that; softening resin was built for exactly this. Penn State Extension notes that a softener can also remove dissolved iron when the pH is above 6.7, hardness runs roughly 3 to 20 grains per gallon and dissolved iron stays under 5 mg/L, though iron that has already oxidized will foul the resin instead. What it will not do, and what to pair it with

Ion exchange does not remove chlorine taste, sediment, bacteria, or most organic chemicals, because those are not ions the resin can trade for. It also adds a small amount of sodium in proportion to the hardness removed.
