The bypass valve is the fitting where the softener meets the house plumbing, and it does exactly what its name says: it routes water around the unit instead of through it. It exists so the softener can be isolated without shutting off the property, and it is also the single most common reason a working softener appears to have stopped.
The three positions
Service is normal operation, with water passing through the resin tank and leaving softened. Bypass sends the supply straight past the unit, so the house has water but it is hard. Some valves have a third shutoff position isolating the softener entirely with no flow to the house at all. When to use it deliberately
During any service on the unit, so the property keeps its water. When filling a swimming pool or a large tank, where softening a very large volume is a waste of salt and capacity. When irrigating, since plants do not need softened water and the sodium is not helpful on soil. When leaving a property empty for a long period. And immediately if the softener starts leaking, which is the situation the bypass is really there for: it stops the leak without shutting the house down.
The mistake that costs a service call
Left in bypass after work is done. The softener regenerates on schedule, consumes salt, sounds entirely normal, and the water at every tap is hard, so the owner concludes the resin is finished or the unit has failed. Before diagnosing anything else, check the valve position, then check for a salt bridge in the brine tank, then check whether brine is being drawn at all. Looking after the valve itself
Bypass valves stiffen with disuse and their internal seals dry out, so exercise the valve occasionally rather than leaving it untouched for years, which is when it seizes or weeps on the one day it is needed. Never force a stiff valve: a cracked plastic bypass on a live main is a considerably worse problem than the one being solved.
