Water purification technology and which problem each one solves

Water purification technology is not one thing. It is six families of process, each removing a different class of contaminant, and almost every real household system is two or three of them in series. Choosing well means identifying what is actually in your water first, then picking the process that addresses it, rather than buying a system and hoping it covers whatever the problem turns out to be.

Start with what is in the water

Every sensible system starts from a test result. If you are on a public supply, the EPA requires every community water system to publish an annual Consumer Confidence Report and maintains a finder for locating yours, which tells you what the utility measured leaving the plant. If you are on a well, none of that applies: the EPA notes that private wells are not federally regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act, so a laboratory panel is the only source of information. Neither substitutes for testing at your own tap when the concern is something that enters the water inside your own plumbing, such as lead from old service lines or fittings.

Mechanical filtration and adsorption

Mechanical filtration separates suspended solids by size: sand, silt, rust and scale caught on or in a cartridge or a backwashing bed. It is the first stage in almost every system because it protects everything downstream. Adsorption is different in kind, using activated carbon to attract and hold dissolved organic molecules on its internal surfaces. That is what removes chlorine, taste and odor, many industrial organics and, with catalytic media, chloramine. Neither process removes dissolved minerals or salts, which is why a house with a good sediment and carbon setup can still have hard water and heavy scaling.

Ion exchange and membranes

Ion exchange swaps unwanted ions for harmless ones on a resin bed. Softening is the household case, trading calcium and magnesium for sodium, and specialty resins do the same trick for nitrate, tannin, arsenic or PFAS. The resin is regenerated rather than replaced, which is why softeners have a brine tank. Membranes are the broadest tool available: reverse osmosis pushes water through a barrier that rejects most dissolved solids, producing water that is close to pure and a concentrate stream that goes to drain. It is the most complete household purification available, at the cost of pressure, a reject stream and a slower rate of production.

Disinfection and distillation

Ultraviolet disinfection inactivates bacteria, viruses and protozoa as water passes a lamp, leaving no chemical residual and adding nothing to the water. It needs genuinely clear water to work, so it is always the last stage after filtration. Chemical disinfection, usually chlorine injection followed by contact time and carbon, is the alternative where flow or water quality makes UV impractical, and it doubles as an oxidizer for iron and sulfur. Distillation boils water and condenses the vapor, leaving dissolved solids behind, and is thorough but slow and energy hungry, which is why it survives in countertop units rather than whole-house installations.

Which technology removes the most?

Reverse osmosis and distillation both address the widest range of dissolved contaminants. Neither is a complete answer alone, since both need protection from sediment and neither is a substitute for disinfection where bacteria are the concern.

Do I need every stage?

No. Buy the stages your test result justifies. A house with good municipal water and a chlorine taste complaint needs carbon, not a six-stage treatment train.

What order do the stages go in?

Sediment first, then oxidation or iron removal, then softening, then carbon, then UV last. Each stage protects the ones after it, and UV needs clear water to work at all.
