An alkaline reverse osmosis system is an ordinary RO system with a remineralization cartridge added after the membrane. The membrane removes dissolved material indiscriminately, including the minerals that give water its taste and its buffering, and the extra stage reintroduces a small amount of calcium and magnesium, which raises pH as a side effect. Most of the value is real; most of the marketing is not.

What the remineralization cartridge does

It is a bed of mineral media, usually calcium and magnesium bearing, that the treated water passes through slowly on its way to the faucet.
