Reverse osmosis system maintenance is mostly three jobs on different clocks: pre-filters and post-filters on a short cycle, the membrane on a long one, and the storage tank's air charge somewhere in between. Skip the first and you destroy the third; skip the checks and the system fails silently, still producing water that tastes fine and no longer rejects much.
The pre-filters protect everything behind them
A residential system usually runs a sediment cartridge and one or two carbon blocks ahead of the membrane. The sediment stage keeps particles off the membrane surface, and the carbon stage removes chlorine and chloramine, which will chemically damage a thin-film composite membrane in a matter of months. These are the cheapest parts in the system and the ones that decide the life of the most expensive part. Change them on schedule, typically twice a year, and sooner on sediment-heavy or heavily chlorinated supplies. A neglected carbon block is the leading cause of premature membrane failure.
Membrane life and how to tell it is over
Membranes last years rather than months, and they degrade rather than break. The way to know is to measure rejection: take a total dissolved solids reading of the feed water and of the permeate on the day the system is commissioned and write both down. Repeat monthly. When the gap between them narrows materially, the membrane is passing more than it did and it is due. Sanitizing at every filter change
Opening the housings exposes the inside of the system to whatever is on your hands and in the air, and reverse osmosis water carries no disinfectant residual to suppress anything that gets in. Sanitize as part of the change: bypass or remove the membrane, run the recommended sanitizing solution through the housings and the tank, let it dwell, then flush thoroughly before refitting the membrane and reconnecting. Wash the housings, inspect and lightly lubricate the O-rings with a food-grade lubricant, and check them for nicks. Most slow leaks at a housing are a damaged or dry O-ring.
The tank air charge, checked yearly
The storage tank has a bladder with a pressurized air charge behind it, and that charge is what pushes water out to the faucet. Check it with the tank fully drained and disconnected from the line, using a tire gauge on the schrader valve, and compare with the figure on the tank label. Low charge shows as a tank that fills but delivers a weak trickle. No pressure and water at the schrader valve means the bladder has failed and the tank needs replacing. The faults each check catches
Slow flow with a healthy tank charge points at loaded pre-filters or low feed pressure. Continuous drain flow points at a failed automatic shutoff valve or check valve. A steadily rising permeate reading points at the membrane. Water at the faucet air gap or a puddle in the cabinet points at a housing O-ring or a push-fit connection that was never seated fully. Keeping a simple log on the cabinet door with dates for each filter change, sanitizing, tank check and pressure reading turns all of that from guesswork into a two-minute diagnosis.
