Water filters to remove lead work only if they are certified for that specific claim, because most carbon filters are not. Lead almost never arrives from the treatment plant: it dissolves out of lead service lines, older solder and brass fittings on the way to your tap. That is why the fix belongs at the drinking tap rather than at the meter.

Find out whether lead is your problem first

Every community water system publishes an annual Consumer Confidence Report, and the EPA maintains a finder to locate yours. That report tells you about the system, but it cannot tell you about your own service line and interior plumbing, which is where lead usually comes from. A tap sample from your kitchen, taken after water has sat in the pipes overnight, is the measurement that matters. Many utilities also keep a service line inventory you can query by address, which is worth checking before you spend anything on equipment.

The filter types certified for lead reduction

Three approaches carry credible lead claims. Carbon block filters, in pitcher, faucet mount, countertop and under-sink forms, use a dense block often blended with a lead-specific adsorptive media. Reverse osmosis rejects lead at the membrane along with a wide list of other dissolved contaminants and is the broadest single answer at one tap. Distillation leaves lead behind in the boiling chamber. In every case the claim lives on the product's performance data sheet, not on the packaging headline, so read the sheet before you buy.

Why the certification wording matters

Two filters that look the same on the shelf can have completely different capability, because certification is granted claim by claim. A filter certified for chlorine taste and odor has been tested for exactly that and nothing more. Lead reduction is a separate test, at a stated capacity, and the rating comes with a gallon figure that defines how long the claim holds. A cartridge past its capacity is not partly effective, it is untested territory, so the replacement schedule is part of the protection rather than a maintenance nicety.

Point of use beats whole house here

Since lead is picked up in the pipes between the main and the faucet, treating at the meter leaves the pipework that causes the problem downstream of the filter. Fit the filter at the tap you drink and cook from, and remember any separate line, such as an unfiltered ice maker feed. Flushing the cold tap after long stagnation helps, and never use hot water for drinking or cooking, since hot water dissolves lead more readily. Questions people ask about water filters to remove lead

Do all carbon filters remove lead?

No. Only filters specifically certified for lead reduction have been tested for it. A general carbon filter aimed at taste and odor makes no lead claim and should not be relied on.

Should I fit a whole house filter for lead?

It is usually the wrong place. Lead is picked up in your own service line and plumbing, downstream of the meter, so a point of use filter at the drinking tap covers the real exposure.

Does boiling water remove lead?

No, and it makes matters slightly worse. Boiling drives off water as steam and leaves the lead behind in a smaller volume, so the concentration rises rather than falls.

Does a water softener remove lead?

It is not designed to and should not be relied on for it. A softener targets hardness minerals, and lead reduction requires a certified filter or reverse osmosis at the tap.
