Whole-house reverse osmosis needs a break tank, a repressurization pump and considerable space, and sends a large volume to drain to supply an entire house, which is why it is rare in residential use. Standard anion resin holds sulfate more strongly than nitrate. On a well carrying both, sulfate progressively displaces the nitrate already captured, and as the bed nears exhaustion the treated water can briefly carry more nitrate than the raw water did. That is called a nitrate spike or dumping, and it is the reason this is not a system to install casually. Nitrate-selective resin is formulated to prefer nitrate and largely avoids the effect, and it is what a competent installer specifies once the sulfate result is in hand. The system needs a salt supply, a drain connection for regeneration, and enough capacity that it regenerates before the bed exhausts rather than after. Regeneration frequency is set by nitrate concentration and household water use, so a high-nitrate well with a large family regenerates often and consumes salt accordingly. The waste stream is brine carrying concentrated nitrate, which some jurisdictions restrict from discharge to a septic system. Confirm that before ordering.
