Certified lead reduction claims are built and tested around point-of-use devices: under-sink carbon block cartridges with lead-selective media, and reverse osmosis systems. They treat the small volume you actually drink and cook with, they sit downstream of every piece of leaded plumbing in the house, and their performance is verified against a standard rather than asserted. The permanent fix and the interim habits
Filters are a control, not a cure. Replacing a lead service line, and replacing leaded fixtures and solder inside the house, is the only step that removes the source. Until then, run the cold tap until it turns noticeably colder before drawing water for drinking or cooking, since standing water carries the highest concentrations. Never use hot tap water for cooking or for making up formula, because heat mobilizes lead from plumbing. Clean faucet aerators regularly, since they collect particulate that can include lead scale flakes shed during plumbing work.

Will a whole house filter protect me if my indoor plumbing has lead solder?
No. Anything picked up after the filter reaches your tap untreated. In that case the useful device is a certified filter at the fixture you drink from.
Does a water softener remove lead?
