A water filter micron rating describes the size of particle a filter is meant to hold back, measured in millionths of a meter. It is a size statement and nothing more. It tells you how fine the mechanical straining is, which is useful for sediment and rust, and it says absolutely nothing about anything dissolved in the water, which is where most household water problems live.
What the number means
A micron is one millionth of a meter, and the rating is the size threshold above which particles are captured. Coarse ratings catch sand, grit and rust flakes. Finer ratings catch silt and the particles that make water look cloudy. The finest mechanical ratings sold for households approach the size of protozoan cysts, which is why some cartridges carry claims about specific organisms and most do not.
Nominal versus absolute, and why it matters
A nominal rating means the filter captures most particles at that size, with no guarantee about the rest. An absolute rating means it captures essentially all of them under a defined test. Two cartridges printed with the same number can therefore perform very differently. If a claim depends on the filter reliably stopping something, look for an absolute rating and a testing standard behind it.
Smaller is not better
A finer filter restricts flow and clogs faster on the same water, so a house fitted with too fine a cartridge gets weak showers and monthly changes. The standard approach is staging: a coarse cartridge first to take the bulk of the load, then a finer one behind it to polish. That protects the expensive element and keeps pressure drop reasonable, which is exactly how a whole-house setup is normally arranged.
What a micron rating cannot tell you
It says nothing about dissolved contaminants, because they are not particles. Chlorine, nitrate and hardness pass any mechanical filter untouched. Iron is the trap: Penn State Extension puts the recommended maximum for iron at 0.3 mg/L and for manganese at 0.05 mg/L, and dissolved iron is invisible until it oxidizes, so a sediment cartridge will catch the rust flakes and completely miss the iron still in solution.
