A water softener for shower use is mostly a marketing name. Real softening is ion exchange over a resin bed, and a bed small enough to hang off a shower arm exhausts almost immediately. What the small units genuinely do is filter chlorine and some metals, which fixes a lot of the symptoms people blame on hardness. If the goal is truly soft water at the shower, the answer is a whole-house softener on the main line.
Softening and filtering are different chemistry
The USGS defines hardness as dissolved calcium and magnesium, with soft water up to 60 mg/L as calcium carbonate, moderately hard from 61 to 120, hard from 121 to 180 and very hard above that. Removing those ions means swapping them for sodium or potassium on a resin, and the resin has to be regenerated with brine when it is full. There is no filter medium that simply catches dissolved calcium on the way past, which is why a cartridge in a shower head cannot soften water for long.
What shower cartridges actually remove
Typical shower filter media are a copper-zinc alloy, sometimes with calcium sulfite or a little carbon. They reduce free chlorine and some dissolved metals in hot water, which is exactly the cause of a chlorine smell in the stall, itchy skin after a long shower and hair that feels stripped. If your complaint is the smell or the skin dryness rather than scale on the glass, one of these will probably help, and it is a cheap experiment compared with a main-line system.
How to tell hardness symptoms from chlorine symptoms
Scale that you scrape off the shower door, white crust on the head, soap that will not lather and stiff towels are hardness. A pool smell, red irritated skin and hair that feels squeaky and brittle are more likely chlorine. Hard water also leaves a film of soap curd on skin that feels like residue rather than dryness. A main-line softener treats every fixture, protects the water heater and the washing machine, and is the only way to get genuinely soft shower water. Salt-free conditioners are the middle option: they alter how scale forms rather than removing hardness, so glass stays cleaner but the water is not soft.
