What a centrifugal water separator does on a well line

A centrifugal water separator, often sold as a spin-down or sand separator, uses nothing but the water's own velocity. Flow enters the body tangentially, spirals down the wall, and the heavier particles are thrown outward and drop into a collection chamber while the clean water rises up the center and continues to the house. There is no cartridge to buy and nothing to replace.

Why a well needs one

Sand and grit are the reason. A well drawing from a sandy formation, a well with a failing screen, or one that has been pumped hard after a drought will deliver abrasive particles that chew out faucet cartridges, jam toilet fill valves, score pump seals and pack the bottom of a water heater. Private wells are not federally regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act, so nobody is monitoring this for you and the first sign is usually grit in the aerator. A separator sits at the head of the treatment train and takes that abrasive load off every device behind it.

How it differs from a cartridge sediment filter

A cartridge filter strains everything larger than its pore rating, including light silt and organic matter, and it clogs steadily until you replace it. A centrifugal separator removes only what is dense enough to be flung out of the flow, which in practice means sand, grit and rust flakes rather than silt, clay or biological material. In exchange it does not clog, its pressure drop stays essentially constant, and its consumable cost is zero. Most well installations use both: the separator strips the abrasive load so the cartridge filter behind it lasts months instead of days.

Installation and the flush routine

Fit it after the pressure tank and before everything else, with isolation valves either side so it can be serviced without draining the house. Mount it vertically, with clearance below for the collection bowl. Separators need flow to work: below their rated range the vortex is too weak to separate anything, so size the unit to the actual delivery of your pump rather than to the pipe diameter. The collection chamber has to be purged, either by opening a manual ball valve until the discharge runs clear or by fitting an automatic flush valve on a timer. A separator nobody flushes fills up and stops separating.

What it will not do

It removes nothing dissolved. Iron in solution, hardness, hydrogen sulfide, chlorine, nitrate and bacteria pass through untouched, and clear water carrying dissolved iron looks exactly the same going in as coming out. Fine silt and tannins that give water a cloudy or tea-colored look are too light to be thrown out and need filtration or coagulation. Treat the separator as the bodyguard for the rest of the system rather than a treatment step in its own right, and put it upstream of the softener so grit never reaches the resin bed or the valve seals, as our water softener installation page describes.

Questions people ask about centrifugal water separator

Does a centrifugal separator need a filter cartridge?

No. It separates particles by centrifugal force alone, so there is nothing to replace. It does need its collection chamber purged regularly, either manually or by an automatic valve.

Will it remove iron from my well water?

Only iron already present as solid rust flakes. Dissolved iron passes straight through and needs oxidation and a media filter, or a softener within its published limits.

Where should it be installed?

After the pressure tank and before all other treatment, mounted vertically with isolation valves either side and clearance underneath for the collection bowl and flush valve.

Why has my separator stopped catching sand?

Usually a full collection chamber that has not been purged, or flow below the unit's rated range so the vortex is too weak to throw particles to the wall.
