Why they are so often sold alongside reverse osmosis
Reverse osmosis strips dissolved minerals along with contaminants, and the result often tastes flat and reads slightly acidic. A remineralizing stage after the membrane restores a little calcium and magnesium, which brings the taste back and lifts the pH toward neutral or above. That pairing is the most common reason a household ends up with an alkaline stage: it was bought as a taste fix on an RO system rather than as a product in its own right. What these systems do not address
Raising pH is not treatment. An alkaline stage does not remove lead, nitrate, arsenic, PFAS or bacteria, and adding minerals to contaminated water leaves it contaminated. Mineral cartridges are simpler: they exhaust as the media dissolves and get changed like any other cartridge, and their effect fades gradually rather than stopping abruptly. In both cases, a pH test strip or meter is the only way to know whether the system is still doing anything, since alkalized water looks and mostly tastes like the water it came from.
