A sediment filter ahead of a softener is not an upgrade, it is the thing that keeps the softener working. The control valve moves a piston through a stack of seals against seats, and grit passing through that assembly wears both. The resin bed itself is blinded by sediment that settles on and into it. Neither failure is dramatic and both are expensive.
What it protects
The valve seals and seats first, since a scored seal lets water pass between stages and produces the classic symptom of water running continuously to drain. The resin bed second: sediment settling into it reduces the surface available for exchange and encourages channelling, so capacity falls without the unit reporting anything. And the injector third, whose small orifice and screen catch fines and grit, and whose blockage stops brine draw entirely while the salt tank still looks full.
Choosing the rating
Moderate rather than fine. The threat is mechanical, so catching grit, rust flakes and pipe scale is what matters, and a very fine cartridge blocks quickly and throttles the whole house for no additional protection. On well water carrying real sediment, stage it: a spin down screen or a coarse cartridge first and a moderate one behind. Size the housing for the peak simultaneous draw, since a restriction here restricts the softener and everything downstream of it.
What it does not do
It does not soften water, remove iron in solution, or reduce chlorine. Dissolved iron in particular is worth naming, because a sediment filter catches only the iron that has already oxidized into particles and lets the dissolved form through to the resin, where it fouls the bed. Penn State Extension notes softeners handle dissolved iron only when pH is above 6.7, hardness is 3 to 20 grains per gallon and dissolved iron is under 5 mg/L, and above that an iron filter is needed rather than a finer sediment cartridge.
Keeping it in service
Fit gauges either side so the pressure drop tells you when to change it rather than guessing, and note the reading when it is new as a baseline. Fit isolation valves so a change does not mean draining the house. And change it on that signal rather than on a calendar, because the load varies.
