Softening water without salt is a slightly misleading phrase, because most salt free equipment does not remove hardness at all. It changes how the calcium and magnesium behave so they are less likely to stick to pipes and heaters. That can be exactly what you want, but only if you know which problem you are solving, because the water stays chemically hard.
What hardness is, and what removal means
The USGS defines hardness as dissolved calcium and magnesium, and classes water as soft up to 60 mg/L as calcium carbonate, moderately hard from 61 to 120, hard from 121 to 180 and very hard above 180. Removing hardness means taking those ions out of the water, which conventional ion exchange does by swapping them for sodium on a resin bed and then rinsing the resin with brine. Any technology that does not perform that exchange leaves the calcium and magnesium in the water, whatever else it does to them.

TAC media carries surface sites that seed hardness minerals into microscopic crystals while the water is still flowing. Those crystals stay suspended rather than depositing on hot surfaces, so scale in the water heater and on fixtures drops sharply. There is no salt, no brine tank, no drain connection and no wastewater, and the media bed is replaced periodically rather than regenerated. Both are legitimate; neither replaces a softener across a whole home.
Magnetic and electronic descalers
Devices that clamp to the pipe and claim to alter hardness with a magnetic or electromagnetic field are widely sold and poorly supported by independent testing. Some users report less visible scale, results are inconsistent, and there is no mechanism that removes calcium and magnesium from the water. If you try one, buy from a seller with a genuine return policy, take before and after photographs of your kettle element and shower glass, and do not remove an existing softener on the strength of it.
When salt free is the right choice
Choose salt free when your real complaint is scale rather than laundry and skin, when a local ordinance restricts brine discharge, when you are on a septic system you would rather not load, when nobody wants to carry salt bags, or when there is no drain near the install location.
